It looks to me that when you pour more energy into a collision, you get more energetic waves that we interpret as gluons. These gluons are created by the energy of the collision. They were not part of the original proton, although a little part of them might be. They are really just very compact waves due to their high energy. You can't tell were one wave starts and another wave begins. They look like particles because of their short wavelength makes them very compact.
