We know that all matter is really made of waves. If we would do the SU(3) calculations using wave interactions, instead of imaginary particles, I think we would understand things better. What we call particles are standing waves in free space, whatever that is. There is a phase transition that obeys the SU(3) rules, but the particles are really still waves. I think that might simplify things somewhat.
